2010
So this is the second part of Awesome shit, where i'm exalting works in which i have come across over the past few months and is some cases longer than that… These are all artists i respect and adore. Once again these would make some great holiday gifts… So lets start of w/ some comics!
FUKITOR by Jason Karns These are my new favorite comix and Jason Karns is one of my new gods… The drawings & color of these are so fucking amazing!! Plus the writing is spot on. I really love these Gruesome, vile, and profane, these stories are a mixture of E.C. comix meets Cannibal Corpse covers. Blood, boobs, and big gaping wounds… buy them all. they are worth it. Fukitor rulez.
Doppelganger by Tom Neely This small b&w comic is 16pgs of Popeye'd madness. "I am what I am" Popeyes famous mantra is dissected and broken down to create the most valid of questions, "Well, who are you then?" This comic has Popeye fight hundreds of other Popeyes, all claiming, "I am" as if to fool themselves into existence… Perfectly executed with nice little touches (such as the HELL stamp on the cover, an ode to HELL comics, whom produced "The Air Pirates" comics, which were parodies of Mickey Mouse comics from DELL comics) Tom Neely does it again. Its cheap and fun. get it here and check out his other works. He is prolific as all fuck and is always trying new things. Check it out here: i will destroy you.
Wall Of Fire Publishing/Shalo P & Peter Gray Hurley These are pics from Shalo P.'s zine Love is Such a Dangerous Game and Peter Gray Hurley's, The Sleep. (contact the artist here) Shalo P's work is a frantic and busy explosion of mad figures, intense line and kenetic power, while Peter's work hits more primitive, instictual, and symbol driven, like a caveman whom loves cartoons… They both draw and create in a way i wish i could, w/total freedom. So these guys have numerous awesome zines out and will be teaming up to do a zine for Drippy Bone Books coming out in Feb 2011 called DEATH TRIP! Keep you eyes peeled to our site for more info in the next few weeks! check out their works and order some zines and music from them. You will be happy you did…
Bianca Barragan's Zines: Trust Me Things You Can Learn When Listening To Strangers Would You Rather…? A Story About Dying Bianca Barragan is a writer. She is a great fucking writer. The greatest find of the entire SF ZIne Fest (along w. the Wall of Fire chaps) my wife and i spent the first night in our hotel reading the stories out loud and laughing!!! It is a hard thing to find good Literary Zines even though some many people think they can write, but these are amazing!!! She has an ability to paint a scene and put you into it with a minimal use of language to convey it. A strong and confident voice and funny as hell, her adventures on the subway, explosive urinating, the habits of wasps, and mens feeble attempts to pick her up are simple, sweet and great. I was laughing out loud at my booth the second day at the Zine Fest, reading TRUST ME. Bianca Barragan is my new favorite writer and i hope we can one day collaborate on a Drippy Bone Books project….. buy these zines!! They are great and cheap! I bought extras to send to my partners in DBB, thats how good. contact her here: www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=13302738&ref=ts
KAWAII 731 / FREDOX New from the masters at Le Dernier Cri comes the next collection from the master of grotesque collage, Fredox! Full color, abusively raw imagery sure to stay with you long after flipping thru its pages… 21x15cm 32 pages in offset cover in silkscreen 3 colors 500ex 8€ Its fucking amazing… Can't stop looking at it… get it here Le Dernier Cri
Sex, Rock & Optical Illusions The Art of Victor Moscoso Master of Psychedelic Poster and Comix finally has a career retrospective… This actually came out awhlle ago (2007 i believe) but i just found out about it a few months ago… I'm waiting to get this for X-mas, but i have picked it up several times at bookstores lately and have has a hard time not leaving the store with it. A great collection spanning his "psychedelic rock posters" , album covers, his work in Zap comix, and some never before seen shit as well. To me some of his comix are the best ever done. Surreal, psychedelic, mostly wordless visions of dreamlike comic bliss… published by Fantagraphics Books
